Anxiety Treatment —
overcome anxiety and get rid of stress
Anxiety can be really tough. It can be debilitating, energy zapping, and hold people back from living the lives they want to live. The tricky part is: Anxiety is also adaptive. It reminds us to get things done and to keep ourselves safe. So we can’t totally get rid of it. Clients who meet with me for counseling in Orange County or via online therapy often tell me they’re feeling anxious, keyed up, irritable, on edge, or stressed out and my goal is to help them discover ways to work with their anxiety, rather than against it.
People regularly ask me: Do I really need counseling for my anxiety? Doesn’t everyone feel this way? Shouldn’t I be able to reduce stress and manage anxiety on my own? Can therapy help me feel less anxious? In short, yes, everyone feels anxious from time to time. Like I mentioned, anxiety can truly be quite helpful. It kicks us into gear and helps us stay safe. But anxiety can also be debilitating. If anxiety is holding you back, stealing your joy, or causing you to regularly snap at the people you love most, chances are anxiety has gotten the best of you. Even more so, anxiety could be ruining your quality of life. This is why I are here to say that working with a therapist to learn how to reduce and manage your anxiety can help. The good news is that anxiety is treatable and an emotion you can learn to manage rather than endure.
Whether I work with anxiety in my therapy office in Brea or via telehealth, I first work to help people understand their anxiety. What anxiety is, where anxiety comes from, how it is managed in the brain, as well as what it does to the body. Next, I partner with clients to discover the interventions that work best for them and I coach them to learn new skills for reducing anxiety and bettering their quality of life. These might include mindfulness and relaxation techniques, healthy coping skills, and other strategies for how to lower anxiety and stress. Using a gentle approach, and with the right pacing, I help clients uncover the root cause of their issues so that they can heal from past hurts or learn new ways of working with stress and emotions. Interestingly enough, avoidance is one of the most effective ways to manage anxiety, but the problem with this approach is that it doesn’t work in the long run and, unfortunately, it tends to intensify anxiety over time. This is why I help clients learn to face their anxieties, identify how avoidance shows up in their lives (we all avoid to some degree!), and learn how to replace avoidant or self-sabotaging strategies with healthier, more effective coping skills that can reduce anxiety long-term and improve quality of life today.
In my work with clients, I treat generalized anxiety disorders, panic attacks, obsessive and compulsive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, and perinatal anxiety disorders. I also work with people who generally feel stressed out and want to find a way to reduce their stress and live a more balanced life. If anxiety, stress, worry or fear is holding you back and hurting your quality of life, I invite you to get in touch with me to talk more about whether or not I think therapy could help.
